Urinary Tract Inflammation & Infection (UTIs):
Urinary tract infections (or UTIs) are common in dogs, however many bladder issues are actually from inflammation where there is no bacteria associated with them at all, so giving antibiotics won’t do much to help. And because antibiotics can cause long-term damage it’s best to avoid them whenever you can.
UTIs can affect your dog’s kidneys, ureter, urethra and bladder.
They can quite often be recurrent and can even have a genetic/breed prevalence. Causes could be related to stress and diet but may also include immunological deficiency or fungal or protozoan infections. Other causes could be bladder stones, injuries, or tumours.
As soon as the bladder gets inflamed for any reason, you’ll notice that your dog frequently tries to urinate. He or she will often end up urinating in inappropriate places, such as throughout the home.
Urinary Incontinence:
The bladder is comprised of smooth muscle groups that are dependent on reproductive hormones. So when hormone production is altered the bladder can lose tone and urine dribble results. Herbs cannot replace hormones, although some do contain estrogenic compounds, but predominantly you need to use herbs to help strengthen and support the structure and function of the bladder and urinary tissues.
For older dogs or epileptic dogs, incontinence can be related more directly to neurological decline, so herbs that improve synaptic transmission and blood circulation to the brain are more suitable. In these cases we would suggest giving them either our Fundamentals: Seniors or My Old Dog flax seed oil blend
Ingredients
Saw Palmetto: Strengthens and nourishes the smooth muscle tissue of the urinary tract
Yarrow: Bacteriostatic agent for treatment of chronic or acute cystitis
Juniper: Astringent and antimicrobial with a particular affinity with genitourinary system; It is also a mild diuretic, good treatment for cystitis, that increases urine production and waste elimination. It can also improve kidney function (Glomerular filtration Rate) using terpineol compounds.
Uva Ursi: Contains hydroquinones which are chemical compounds that are active against a wide range of pathogens, often implicated in urinary tract infections. It also works as an astringent, antimicrobial and diuretic
Plantain: Another herb with a particular affinity for the urinary tract. It can be very soothing to the tract by producing mucilage, whilst still providing astringent, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actions, from its aucubin and saponin constituents.
Goldenseal: Antimicrobial herbs, that can also help to boost the action of echinacea, helps to reduce inflammation, and has an affinity with lower urinary tract
CornSilk: Mucilage producing herb which soothes and protects internal mucous membranes. It is also diuretic and an astringent, can help tackle chronic inflammation of any portion of urinary tract or kidneys, without causing added irritation to the kidneys
Echinacea: Supports the lymph system to eliminate waste materials. It has an affinity with urinary tract. Furthermore, as an immunostimulant and antimicrobial it can useful for treating bacterial or fungal infections of the bladder and urethra.
