The Benefits Of Bovine Colostrum

Low Section Of Elegant Senior Man Walking His Dog Outdoors In City.

Here at BarkinBISTRO we are very excited to announce that we are currently able to provide our customers with our very own colostrum from our herd of cows! We produce this as a raw product which very few companies do. In this article, we will share the incredible benefits colostrum has to offer folks.

We are also very proud to let you know that ethics play a big part with us.  Calves need colostrum from their mothers for at least 48 hours and some providers of colostrum do not allow this natural process to take part. Our calves have the much-needed immune-boosting colostrum before we then take the colostrum.

Our brand new product is aptly named:

What Is Colostrum?

Colostrum is a substance in mothers’ milk, produced by all female mammals and the first nutrition a newborn will have, it helps to start building a healthy immune system and is essential for the survival of the newborn.

Colostrum is also well known for its role in helping dogs with allergies, among many other benefits, due to its potent immune-boosting properties.

It contains bioactive components which enhance the immune system such as

  • Immunoglobins
  • Lactoferrin
  • Lysozyme
  • Lactoperoxidase
  • A-lactalbumin
  • B-lactoglobulin

Colostrum also provides:

  • Over 100 times the amount of immunoglobulins (antibodies) than regular milk.
  • Is rich in transfer factors (a substance made by white blood cells) that educate the immune system to recognise specific allergens.
  • Improves the intelligence of the immune system.
  • Increases energy.
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin K
  • Protein
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Selenium

Why Is Colostrum So Good For Dogs?

The key benefits of colostrum are its amazing healing properties for your pup and here are a few:

  • The antibodies in colostrum include IgG, which gives your pup immunity and protects them as their immune system matures.  They also help to neutralise viruses and fight bacteria and infections.
  • IgM are the first antibodies a newborn makes and they bind to bacteria and destroy any invaders.
  • IgA is made by your pup more than any other antibody and forms a lining in the digestive tract, coating any bacteria or viruses so that they are unable to enter the body.  Very important for your pup and if not enough in the body, can cause bowel inflammation.

Is colostrum safe for dogs?

Yes folks, colostrum is safe for dogs but if your pup has lactose intolerance, it is sensible to start with small amounts.  Colostrum is very low in lactose and is unlikely to cause any reaction, but as always, if your pup has a beef allergy, keep an eye out for any digestive upset. Link to Goat Milk article as an alternative!

Here are our top 13 benefits of colostrum for dogs.

1 – Allergies

Colostrum helps to manage the inflammation that causes itching and irritation to your pup and allergies are caused by an overactive immune response.

2 – Ageing

Research shows that colostrum can have anti-ageing effects on your pup and can help bone density and lean muscle mass in older dogs which in turn, means your pup will have better strength and mobility as they become senior, plus it can help with cognitive decline.

3 – Autoimmune disease

Sadly, here at BarkinBISTRO we see a lot of pups suffering from autoimmune diseases, most likely caused by environmental toxins link to article here. and over-vaccination. Colostrum helps to regulate an overactive immune system and reduce inflammation which can reduce the risk of autoimmune disease.

4 – Cancer

Colostrum’s lactoferrins (protein) are full of anti-inflammatory effects which help to prevent cancer. The immunoglobulins found in colostrum can protect your pup’s immune system, and fight viruses and bacterial infections. Also, the clever cytokines (small proteins) activate certain white blood cells that can find cancer and kill the cells, but leave the healthy cells to survive – the body is so clever here folks.

5 – Canine Flu

Colostrum can help prevent respiratory diseases and canine flu and studies show that colostrum can be 3 times more effective than vaccination, link to Vaccination article here  which in turn is likely to cause gut problems. If your pup goes to daycare or kennels, it is sensible to give colostrum a week or so before to help prevent contracting kennel cough or flu.

6 – Diarrhoea

Colostrum can help if your pup is suffering from diarrhoea, even if very young, studies show that colostrum can improve the faecal quality of weaned puppies as they can pick up and eat anything, as we all know!

7 – Gut issues/damage

If your pup has had any medication (antibiotics, steroids etc.) colostrum helps to repair the gut from the side effects of drugs.

8 – Joint problems/Arthritis

Colostrum is good for healing and repairing tissue if your pup has joint problems or arthritis – the MSM in colostrum helps to manage pain and inflammation and helps to maintain cartilage which is essential in older pups.

9 – Leaky Gut

Something we hear about daily and this happens when the lining of the gut becomes damaged.  When damaged, undigested food particles can pass through the gut lining  into the bloodstream and cause serious damage and allow the body to be more susceptible to disease.  Colostrum can boost the immune system and helps to heal leaky gut, plus the lactoferrin in colostrum assists in managing inflammation and has the additional benefits of prebiotics which feed the healthy bacteria.

10 – Oral/dental health

Oral and dental health are so important here folks and we see a huge amount of pups suffering link to raw feeding article here from this problem that in turn can lead to other diseases such as kidney disease. Keeping your pups clean is essential think we need a raw meaty bones article! and feeding a raw diet will help keep your pup’s teeth clean, unlike processed kibble.  Colostrum boosts the immune system and although not directly helps to clean your pup’s teeth, it heals any gut problems as mentioned above that can be caused by bad oral health.

11 – Skin Problems

Colostrum can be beneficial with wounds and skin repair as it is full of antibacterial properties.  You can try it for

  • Abscesses
  • Cysts
  • Ear infections
  • Hot spots
  • Insect bites
  • Wounds
  • Rashes

12 – Yeast

Yeast is another problem we see so often and is normally seen by pups who eat kibble as it is full of unnecessary carbohydrates and sugars.  Link to Detoxing from Kibble and What to Expect here.  As we know, yeast loves sugar and removing it from your pup’s diet will help to rid the body of sugar if the yeast is starved. Adding some colostrum to your pup’s diet helps to fight nasty yeast infections as the lactoferrins are high in antifungal properties and immune-boosting agents

13 – Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is something we are all concerned about when our pups pick up ticks in the summer months. link to Fleas and Ticks article here. Colostrum studies show that it is more effective than the antibiotic used for Lyme disease (doxycycline). The lactoferrin is the magic part of colostrum here folks. This is also relevant for humans too!

Choosing the best colostrum for your dog.

We believe here at BarkinBISTRO that our colostrum is the best you will be able to find.  Our cows are pasture-fed all summer and come in for the winter where they are fed silage and hay.  We do not use any chemical growth hormones (as some farms do) which may cause potential health risks. Our colostrum is fresh and then frozen.

How much colostrum do I give my dog?

Colostrum has the best effects when fed on an empty stomach, but if your pup does not enjoy the taste, you can mix in bone broth or yoghurt. link to your products here and we need a bone broth article!

We suggest starting with small amounts to see how your pup reacts to colostrum. Approximately 1-2 teaspoons for a pup weighing around 11/12 kilos and adjust accordingly.

A few extra benefits of colostrum include:

  • Balancing blood glucose
  • Increasing T-cell production (healthy bone marrow)
  • Reducing insulin need
  • Metabolising fat for fuel in the body

What’s not to like here folks!

As in all our articles, we suggest you do your research and if you have any concerns, please consult your Holistic Vet.  We believe that colostrum is a superb addition to your pup’s diet, especially if they are experiencing any health issues.
